Description On July 1-3, 1863, in fields such as these in and around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the bloodiest battle in the American Civil War was fought. Union forces under the command of General George G. Meade clashed with Confederate forces under the command of Robert E. Lee. Ultimately the Union forces prevailed but at the terrible cost of over 46,000 men killed or wounded. The battle has been described as the turning point in the war.In November of that year, at the dedication ceremony for the Gettysburg National Cemetery, President Lincoln delivered his historic Gettysburg Address.
