Isn't this a simply marvellous party? Such food, such wine, so many famous faces! But I'm not here as a sycophant. I'm sure I'll meet many of these very same people again. No, I'm here to divulge a great secret, and I've chosen you to educate the world.
Can you tell me why it is Hell is described as a pit of fire? Nothing could be further from the truth. Oh, there's heat all right, but no flames licking the souls of the damned.
You recall, I'm sure, the tempter in the garden: sleek, smooth, irresistible, elegantly coiled around that tree. Imagine, then, a large dark cave populated with his relatives and there you have it: Hell is a snakepit, writhing, alive with every variety of serpent you can imagine - and some you can't.
Surprised? Allow me to elucidate further. The root of the very word Hell - Indo-European, by the bye - means 'to cover or hide.' And that describes it exactly. The snakes slither and slide and wrap the unfortunate guests in their urgent cold embraces. Their flickering tongues are the only flamelike things in evidence.
The heat, you ask? In a cave full of snakes you must expect some biting, and the poison that never kills, only torments, is hotter than you can or would ever want to imagine. The choir of the damned is a delightful thing to hear; the shrieks and howls accompanied by all that hissing only enhance the atmosphere.
Do be sure to spread the word, won't you? All that surprise about no fire and snakes gets old. However do you stand on your legs for so much of the day? RC deWinter is a Connecticut writer/digital artist whose artwork has been published in many print and online journals, including, among others, The American Muse, Fine Art Photography, Poetry Nook, 2River View, Pink Panther, Official Feature Online Entertainment Magazine, Garden Tripod and also used as set décor on ABC-TV’s “Desperate Housewives." In 2013 Ms. deWinter she was one of six finalists for a Shorty Award, the national social media awards, in art. Ms. deWinter is honored to be the first digital artist invited to exhibit at the Arts of Tolland Gallery in Connecticut. Her 4-week solo exhibition was an unqualified success.
