Mrs. Peter Tells All
If you're reading this, for sure you'll be knowing my husband Peter, the one they call the pumpkin eater. Pumpkin eater my hind leg! The one time I baked a pumpkin he took one look at it and ran off to the ordinary for a beef pasty he washed down with his usual five or six pints. But yes, it's true he couldn't keep me, in more ways than one. If he hadn't been too busy holding up the counter in the tavern I wouldn't have had to go and hire myself out to keep body and soul together for the both of us. He couldn't have me, being too drunk most times to do much beyond whining and complaining, so yes, I sold myself to put food on the table. 'Course this led to a merry chase 'round the mulberry bush, with Peter blaming me for his drinking - a scurvy lie if ever there was one - but he latched onto what I did to excuse all those pints my body paid for. He must've been feeling sorry for himself out loud down there at the tavern, 'cause some damn fool told him about the pumpkin shell, an infernal device if ever there was one, and one morning while I was sleeping off a late and busy night Peter managed to get one on me. Locked up the old money-maker, he did, and if I hadn't gotten Jake Greene the smith to hammer and cudgel it off we'd both be starved scarecrows by now. Oh yes, Peter put me in a pumpkin shell alright, but he couldn't keep me very well, no matter what you've heard to the contrary. So here I am, out selling what no proper man should have to pay for, and Peter's back down at the tavern, drinking up as much of my profits as he can. Peter, Peter, pumpkin eater! I'm the wife he still can't keep, and that pumpkin shell's in pieces somewhere in Jake's smithy, unless he's melted it down and
