Description Hay is a three to four foot tall grass and is grown in a field like this. At harvest time, it is mowed to ground level with a hay cutter. Then the hay bailer (pulled by a tractor) is driven over the mowed hay, which is laying on the ground. The baler automatically rakes the hay up into its baling mechanism, forms a bale of hay, and ejects it out the back into the wagon. On larger hay farms than the one shown here, a much larger machine, called a 'combine', is used.
