Artist Statement Chinese Brush Painting has been my love for over 30 years. Everything from the beautiful bamboo brushes, ceramic dishes & rich black ink drew me to this painting style.
In the tradition of Chinese brush painters, I paint from my imagination in the studio, not painting from a scene in front of me. I might watch fog roll over Mt. Tam, the moon rising behind a tree or stare at a table filled with scattered photos, then sit in my studio and paint from memory.
To make my art, I combine my knowledge of traditional teachings, inspiration from Vermont, California, where I live and Montana & Alaska where I have visited. That is how I make Chinese brush painting my own. Despite my confessed impatience and high energy, I enjoy the focus and delicacy that is required in my art. While I favor the traditional Chinese subjects and the techniques, I like to mix them with handmade & unusual paper as well as some western influence.
I hope you enjoy my paintingsā¦ I love creating them!
