Current Gallery: icelandichorses ( piece)
Icelandic horses, hardy, gentle and proud, are descended from ancient Viking stock. Icelandic law keeps them purebred, prohibiting the importing of other breeds who may intermix or bring diseases to the herd. The ones photographed here were curious and friendly, coming close to see if I carried snacks for them. Kept outdoors through most of the harsh winter, they grow long coats and have characteristically long manes and tails, sometimes of dramatically contrasting colors. Of all the horses I've photographed, I loves these best.
