Current Gallery: tynebridges ( piece)
I live in the North East of England in the UK. The area offers much to the photographer in memorable lanscapes and places to visit. The natural lighting can draw out the beauty of a place. My pictures in this gallery are of the famous tyne bridges. The most recent is the Millennium Bridge, which has become generally known as the "millennium eye" Newcastle and Gateshead are famous for the many bridges across the River Tyne, which gives the area an instantly recognizable skyline. The Swing Bridge was built in 1876. It was a remarkable feat of engineering. At the time of its construction it was the largest swing bridge in the world. It allowed larger ships to reach the coal staithes and factories up river. The High Level Bridge was the second bridge to cross the Tyne, when it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1849. It was the worlds first combined road and railway bridge. The bridge designer was a local engineer called Robert Stephenson. The Tyne Bridge was opened in 1928 by King George V and also a first in bridge construction. The most recent addition is the Millennium Bridge which is the worlds' first tilting bridge opening like a "winking eye" to allow shipping to pass. Two concrete piers on either side of the river hide the massive hydraulic rams to push the bridge open. Opening takes around 4 minutes. Since its opening in September 2001 it has won many awards for design. Nature has much to offer the photographer in bringing a subject to life and my enjoyment is to capture the atmosphere and beauty of a famous place or natural event. Many natural events are infrequent and it is my challenge to be there. Through using digital photography I try to draw out the character of the event. I hope that you will enjoy my pictures and may feel a little of the atmosphere of the place that I have experienced. Brian Wright
