Description Colorized photo from 1890Original title: Brown's landing, Rice CreekPhotographer: Detroit publishing Location: Brown's Landing, Rice Creek What must it have been like to travel around to unknown parts of the world a hundred years ago? Bandits around to rob you (there is a gun just behind the door), your on your own out there. Some are there to explore new lands, others are there to hunt and survive. Other's are there to photograph everything. These people are die hard photographers. This is the cast and crew of Detroit Publishing, they made colorized postcards, and they brought some serious gear. Check out the Mammoth plate camera on the boat. That one is owned by William Henry Jackson. He takes that thing everywhere, up in the mountains or down in the swamp. It measures anywhere between 18x21in to 22x25in. Keep in mind there is a large glass plate inside about the size of a window pane. All of that has to be dragged around carefully. There is another camera set up on the shore for selfies. The boat's name the 'Princess', its a steam launch, it was built in 1881, with number 150216, it launched originally from Jacksonville Florida. It mostly rand around the Palatka and Oklawaha river. This location, Rice creek is a tributary that comes off of Etonia creek, that comes off the St. Johns River. In these days they saw big things happening at Browns landing, but right now its a mosquito infested swamp.
