Description Colorized photo from 1907Original title: Wabash Ave.Photographer: Detroit PublishingLocation: 45 East Monroe St, Chicago, IL (looking at S Wabash)This is South Wabash Ave in 1907, I could say this is what it did look like, but nothing really changed in a 100 years time. Most of the buildings still exist today. The only one gone now is that hotel on the corner. That hotel was called the Clifton House (also known as the Windsor Clifton House), build in 1872, razed in 1927. This was the second hotel by this name. It had six stories, and a total of 225 rooms., 175 of which were sleeping rooms. The hotel could accommodate 500 people. The hotel was built before these tracks were put into place. The tracks themselves were put in by the late 1890's. The removal of the building made way for a Men's clothing store, Carson, Pirie, & Scott. The reddish pointy building is the JP Atwater building, built in 1877, still there today.Next two over, where that sign is, that is the Silversmith building, built in 1897, it became a landmark in 1996, and is still a hotel. That tall brown building is the Heyworth building, built in 1904, stands 19 stories, it became a landmark in 2000.And if you look at the very end of the block, that white building second in from the back, that is the Marshall Fields dept store.
