Description Colorized photo from 1910Original title: Up the Ohio from Eden ParkPhotographer: Detroit PublishingLocation: 950 Eden Park Dr. Cincinnati, OH.This is Eden Park, but before it was a park, it was land that belonged to Nicholas Longworth, a prominent landowner, and later on, wine maker. He originally used this land for growing grapes. As the land was stripped of trees for house construction, the bare hillsides were used to grow grapes, as they were hard to build on. The vineyard was called 'The Garden of Eden' and though he tried to sell this land later on in the 1840's, the city didn't need it until 1869, and then turned much of it into a reservoir and park. They also kept the Eden name. This particular spot of the park is called 'the twin lakes', even though they look nothing like each other. However before it was a pretty park, it was a limestone quarry, which they used to build parts of the town and the walls for the reservoir. I can only assume they left large holes from the quarry and thought it would make a nice park.Today this park still exists, same bridge, and a lot more trees. In the background is Walnut Hills, a rich town full of large houses. That large house on the left, and in fact that entire mountain, are gone. I've never seen them remove a mountain before, but I couldn't find it. You can see a small church in the background, this is St. Rose Church, and next to that is the Cincinnati Water works building built in 1904-1907. But for the rest, its mostly gone or covered by trees.
