Description Hand colored photo from 1900Original title: Picadilly CircusPhotographer: C.H. GravesLocation: Piccadilly Circus, London, UKThis busy intersection is known as Piccadilly Circus, its located in London, England. Many of these buildings are still standing, and were built in the 1860's. Those are double-decker wagons, which later on became double-decker buses which you still see there today. Bet you are wondering how it got this weird name though. Well it all started in 1612, when a respected tailor by the name of Roger Baker became well known for his Piccadillies, (a type of old-fashioned collar made of lace). After awhile his business was known as the Piccadilly by the locals, and this type of circle street junction is known as a circus in England. I doubt the house is still there, but the name stuck, almost willing to bet all the odd names are after people in the past. That fountain is still there, its called 'Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain', it was installed in 1893. It's often referred to as Ero's (the Greek god of love, due to the cupid), but that's wrong.
