Description Colorized photo from 1915Original title: Eastern HotelPhotographer: Bain NewsLocation: 61 Whitehall St, NY (Whitehall St & South St)In 1790, Captain John B Coles, purchased a warehouse located on this spot. He replaced it with a new hotel in 1822, at the time it was called the Eagle Hotel. When the famous steamer came to New York, named the SS Great Eastern (it was the largest ship built at the time), he renamed the hotel in its honor, calling it the Eastern Hotel. The frame of the building contained mahogany beams, which were used as ballast by the eighteenth-century merchantmen.Among the hotel's guests were Robert Fulton, Jenny Lind, P. T. Barnum, and many of the illustrious entertainers who appeared in Castle Garden, now the Aquarium. The hotel was razed in 1963, it was originally opposite the Ferry terminal building (which is still there). Now if you look at the right, just at the top of the skyline, behind that flag pole, you'll see a light house. This was dedicated to the Titanic in 1913. It had a mercury light with 2500 candle power, colored in green. It was visible for 7-10 miles down the narrows. And due to its color everyone knew where they were. On top of the lighthouse was a small ball, which dropped every day at noon, so people can correct their watches. The lighthouse was a part of another building. The lighthouse stayed at that location till 1967, when they wanted to demolish the building. But historical activists wanted to keep the structure, so it was taken down and moved onto 15 State St. I believe it was used as a tourist attraction information hub. It was later moved to Fulton and Pearl streets, where it lives now.Mostly what I love about this street is the activity. The guy with the ice blocks, a guy moving the empty soda bottles, presumably its refrigerated on the inside. There are a number of shoe shines, cafe's and news stands. My guess is that being a hotel, you would often see wagons like that out front.
