Description Colorized photo from 1898Original title: Double Ifairlie Engine Used on Vera Cruz RoadPhotographer: Mayo & WeedLocation: MexicoThis unusual looking locomotive is called a Double Fairlie. It was designed by Robert Francis Fairlie in 1864. He never liked the design of locomotives, he felt all the wheels should be doing something, there shouldn't be anything on it that isn't helping the train. So those extra wheels that simply roll, drag the train down and add weight. He didn't like tenders for the same reason. He thought it was a waste of time to turn the engine around to go in another direction and didn't think driving backwards was all that efficient. He created this thing. Basically it has two front ends, coal loaded in the middle and the firebox was in the center, the entire thing was one long boiler. His first model had drafting issues, which was corrected over a few designs. By the third engine, it was designed with two fireboxes, which solved a lot of problems. While he solved the problems he went out to fix, this engine had a lot of problems of its own. For one thing, the driver couldn't see out of one side of the engine, because the firebox was in the way. And all the controls switched hands depending on the direction they went in. The coal space was very limited, there was no tender, so you had to rely on only that supply. Without those bulky extra wheels he didn't like in the front, the ride was rough and would often derail. This particular model was made by the Yorkshire Engine Company in 1885, its number was 365, and was used in Mexico.
