discharging
brush in hand i sat before a vase of flowers
an arrangement of the inexpensive unexotic
and thought to paint it in perhaps romantic style
and then i wondered why
it had been a long spell of pretty words
and selling nothing
just another piece to be buried in a backwash
of compliments
a tasteless stew of fluff
and neither do they pay the bills
all the rage at being praised and staying poor exploded
i dropped the brush and knifed the canvas
black and thick
smearing it with the disappointment
boiling in my blood along with flecks of obscurity
the demonskin in which an artist lives
and then the vase
a toxic dream glowing
radioactive
to hold the ragged flowers bleeding into one another
a louche bouquet scooped from the gutter of despair
when i'd transfused the poison in my veins
to canvas and stood back surveying what i'd done
i was satisfied
it wouldn't please the patrons in the middlebrow milieu
who praised and never bought my flowers
but in paint it was the truth of what i'd say
if they could hear me
