the lessoning
on moonlit nights he stands
in the summer lake
feeding on the stars that have fallen into
the always frigid water
he thinks he's elusive
alone unwatched
but i always know when to tiptoe through
the silent pines to spy on his gorging
yes i know what they call him
sea lion rock but what do they know
he's no clown performing for fish
he's a magus stocking up on the magick
he'll later dispense to the unwary
the taste of that magick still lingers
my tongue is furred with it
thick and bitter in its decomposing
they say every witch has a dragon
and you were mine
glittering in the treacherous light
of the lying moon
i swallowed the stars you
disgorged so generously
poisonous treasure that only
whetted the appetite for more
but like salem stones
pressed me into the wormy earth
from which i managed to arise
blessed forever with the
knowledge of treachery
