A Perfect Autumn Afternoon
It was one of those perfect autumn afternoons, the kind that lures you from your torpor and begs you to bathe yourself in the dappled sunlight streaming through the trees.
Unable to resist, I took myself out to the garden bench, intending to lean back, close my eyes and daydream.
Best laid plans
My mind would not cease from the torment I planned to leave safely locked inside the house. Not even the suns warm kiss could erase the anxious thoughts that, like leaves caught by a tricksy wind, flew around my tired brain, skittering, colliding, coalescing to form even greater worries.
Surrendering to self-destruction, I pulled a cigarette from the ever-present pack and started the necessary conflagration. I drew in a lungful of sweet poison, then exhaled; a great sigh of smoke enveloped me. I repeated this process until the crisp fall air was defiled, clouded with bluegray vapor.
Memories arose and took shape in that smoke surrounding, piercing with bittersweet thorns, rue, embers and ashes of regret. Like a penitent waiting for the summons to the confessional I reviewed my every sin, categorizing old to new, small to great. The burning cylinder between my fingers was forgotten as I wandered the corridors of remembrance until at last it scorched me, snapping me back to what had been, before my foray, a perfect autumn afternoon. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
